Government Agencies

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)

The latest information from NIMH about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of various mental illnesses.  Included are brochures and information sheets, reports, press releases, fact sheets, and other educational materials.

US Dept of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS)

OSERS supports programs that assist in educating children with special needs, provides for the rehabilitation of youth and adults with disabilities, and supports research to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.  Links within the site contain useful information on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) .

Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is the administrative arm of the State Board of Education.  Through statewide school-improvement initiatives and its regulatory functions, the Department strives to assure that all citizens have access to high-quality educational opportunities and services.  This site includes extensive listings of DESE publications, programs and services.  See also the DESE Division of Special Education.


Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD)

A national, not-for-profit organization founded in 1987 "in response to the frustration and sense of isolation experienced by parents and their children with AD/HD."   Their web site includes fact sheets on AD/HD, membership information, legislative updates, and an online "store" offering tapes and videos of CHADD conferences.

Learning Disabilities

Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA)

LDA is a national, non-profit, volunteer organization including individuals with learning disabilities, their families and professionals. LDA is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for all individuals with learning disabilities and their families, to alleviating the restricting effects of learning disabilities, and to supporting endeavors to determine the causes of learning disabilities. The web site includes fact sheets, legislative alerts, membership information, and an on-line "store".

Learning Disabilities Association of Missouri (LDA)

LDA-Missouri provides information and support to parents, learning disabled individuals and professionals, hosts an annual State Conference each October, provides workshops for parents and professionals, and a video lending library. 

Mental Health

Autism Society of America

"The mission of the Autism Society of America is to promote lifelong access and opportunities for persons within  the autism spectrum and their families, to be fully included, participating members of their communities  through advocacy, public awareness, education, and research related to autism."  The web site contains information and help for those newly diagnosed, an extensive reading list, addresses of local affiliates, and more.

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)

A nationwide, not-for profit, tax-exempt organization whose mission is "to eradicate mental illness and improve the quality of life of those affected by these diseases."   Their web site includes reviews of books on mental illness, an on-line book store, membership information, and more.

Nat'l Info. Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY)

NICHCY is a U.S. Department of Education funded information and referral center that provides information on disabilities (including learning disabilities) and disability-related issues for families, educators, and other professionals.  Extensive list of on-line publications.

A reference page from the Autism Society of America, contains extensive helpful information and resources for parents regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Natl Assn for Education of Young Children (NAEYC)

NAEYC is "the nation's largest organization of early childhood professionals and others dedicated to improving the quality of early childhood education programs for children birth through age eight."  The site includes a special section highlighting resources for parents and families.

KIDS COUNT in Missouri

Kids Count in Missouri (KCM) is "a collaborative project of Citizens for Missouri's Children, The Children's  Trust Fund and more than 30 public and private organizations from across the state. The project's mission is to improve the well-being of Missouri's children by heightening awareness of children's issues within local communities and by promoting more effective responses to children's needs throughout the state."
